Istiak Emon found a new career path in Finland

12 Mar, 2025

Istiak Emon graduated from Saimaa Vocational College Sampo in October after completing a degree in cleaning and property services in record time. Originally from Bangladesh, Istiak studied in a group of international students.

In his home country he worked and studied software engineering at the same time, but eventually dropped his studies. As he considered his next steps, Istiak became interested in studying abroad.

The length of the education (1-1,5 years) and the possibility of finding a job quite fast seemed interesting. My brother also lives here, he is a graduate from LUT and I talked to him about what it was like in Finland.

There are some differences in working cultures between the two countries. However, he feels that the independent way of working in Finland has been a positive experience.

In Finland, employers value the independence of employees, he says.

He also praises the education system, and the warm and friendly welcoming from teachers.

Learning here is practical and the teachers are very supportive, he says.

Work placements have been an important part of Istiak’s studies. He has had the opportunity to work in hotels and restaurants, which has helped him to better understand the Finnish working life.

In the future Istiak is aiming for a permanent job and career progression, for example as a cleaner and housekeeper in the cleaning and property services sector. He also has an interest in teaching as a profession. Istiak’s message to those considering studying in Finland is clear:

Study hard, learn about the language and culture, and enjoy!
